PHC vs Barley House Wolves

The Portland Hurling team had their second league game of the Northeast Junior 'C' Hurling season on Saturday at Wainwright field in South Portland against the Barley House Wolves of Concord, NH (2013 Junior 'C' National Champions). Portland was victorious by a score of 04-07 (19) to 01-04 (7) and increase their season standings to 2 wins and 0 losses.

Dan Flanagan and Bryon Williams got the scoring started early, each scoring a goal and multiple overs in the first half. With our regular goalie absent, Aiden O'Brien stepped up and was solid in net while controlling the defensive. The defense, lead by the Gormley brothers, Jon and Matt, Tim Schneider, Channing Denton, and Doug Adams proved to be very stout in front of Aiden, allowing the Wolves only minimal chances to score. Controlling the midfield for Portland were Matt Ellis, Conor Boyle, Larry Maher and Ross Myers, who was making his debut for the club. In the second half, Joel Wezowicz and Matt Anderson added goals to extend the lead. Providing additional support off the bench were John Haffenreffer, Tommy Balzano and Ed Burns.

Portland travels to Canton, Ma on Sunday, June 14th for a match-up against the 2014 Junior 'C' National Champions from Worcester, MA at 12pm. The game will be held at the Irish Cultural Centre of New England, at 200 New Boston Dr., Canton, MA.

PHC @ Hartford

The Portland Hurling Club headed down to Hartford this past Sunday to open their Junior 'C' hurling season and was able to come away with a hard fought victory 01-05 to 01-03.

Offensively, the club was lead by Matt Anderson who had a goal and 1 over, Larry Maher who had 3 overs and Dan Flanagan who contributed an over. Defensively, the back line of Mike Delahanty and Chris Fleming was strong, with great support from the half back line of Tim Schneider, Doug Adams and Cameron Thompson. J.J. Twohig kept Hartford at bay with a gutsy performance in net. Conor Boyle helped control the midfield, while Dustin Honey and Tommy Balzano, who were playing in their first hurling match ever, provided great support upfront.

A big thanks to Hartford GAA for hosting and to the extended Boyle family for making us feel at home with some great fan support. Portland hits the pitch again for their next Junior 'C' match, Saturday May 30th at their home field (Wainwright) in South Portland against the Barley House Wolves of Concord, New Hampshire.

2014 Season Recap

The 2014 season has officially come to an end. We had made some changes at the beginning of the season with the addition of our bainestoir (coach) Pete Marrieta who did a great job keeping our sidelines organized during travel games and helped keep our training and pub games moving in the right direction on Wednesdays. Although our travel team did not make it to Nationals this year, we started practicing 13 a side in our pub league games to help prepare us more for those all too important travel games against Hartford, Worcester, and Barley House Wolves. This year we had the pleasure of welcoming rookies Conor Boyle, Dan Flanagan and Doug Adams to the club! All three played a major role and had an immediate impact on the field. We are always looking to recruit new members/teammates so if you, or anyone you know, is interested please don't hesitate to contact us either via our website, or follow us on Facebook (PortlandHurlingClub) or Twitter (@PortlandGAA)!
