2015 NACB Finals - Chicago, IL

With the Northeast Championship in the books, PHC challenged the rest of North America at the great game of Hurling. Teams from around North America, including Canada and the United States, come together every year at the North American County Board Finals to compete in Gaelic Football, Camogie, and Hurling. This year Chicago hosted at Gaelic Park in Oak Forest, IL. PHC brought a crew of 16 players to the pitch and showed the rest of America and Canada how Hurling is really played. Seattle was the first challenge - they brought a great set of players but ultimately fell to PHC in a 4-9(PHC) 2-5(Seattle) victory for PHC. Denver brought their best squad to the afternoon game. With a Bye during the first matches in the morning, Denver was well rested and ready to play. PHC, on the other hand, was all geared up and playing like a well oiled machine! The Denver Gaels fell to Portland in a 4-9(PHC) 2-4(Denver) victory for PHC.

Saturday morning came quickly with some much needed cloud cover which kept the temperatures from reaching into the 90's as it had the previous day. Madison put on a great show, beating PHC in the Semi-Finals 0-17(Madison) 1-6(PHC). PHC had many opportunities but could not make up the difference from the 0-14 0-3 deficite from the first half. Congrats to Portland Hurling Club on giving it their all and making it further in the competition than ever before! Here's to making it to the Finals next year!

Barley House Wolves Host 5-A-Side Indoor Tournament

A determined team from Portland headed down to Bow, New Hampshire this past weekend to play in the first annual Barley House Wolves 5-a-side indoor hurling tournament. With a few seasoned veterans, one new recruit and Chris Fleming as bainisteoir, the team put up a valiant effort, winning 1 game and losing 2 close matches.

In their first match of the day, Portland lost to Team RamRod, made up of Barley House Wolves players, by a score of 11-7. Game two found the Portland team in the losers bracket against another team made up of Wolves players, but this time, the score was in their favor (11-3). After advancing with a win in game 2, the Portland team was up against Last Hooah, made up again of Barley House Wolves players. In a closely contested match, Portland fell 15-11 to end their day and stay in the tournament.

Offensively, the team was lead by Dan Flanagan, Matt Anderson, Mike Delahanty, and newcomer Albert McCormack while Joel Wezowicz and Casey McCormack anchored the defense. While they didn't take home the grand prize of Maple Syrup and a slab of granite (and bragging rights), they did escape with minimal injuries and a good time had by all.

Thanks again to the Wolves for putting on the tournament and all members of the team who could get out and represent Portland Hurling Club.

In The News!

Portland Hurling Club was represented by Mike Delahanty and Conor Boyle at The Maine Heritage Center in Portland, welcoming the Consul General of Ireland Brendan O'Caollai and the Vice Consul Jillian O'Keeffe. O'Caollai was proud to see a sport steeped in Irish hitory making its way to the United States and shares his Irish pride with the 37 Million American who claim Irish ancestory.
