Portland Takes the Shield Winning 4 of 5 Matches!

Portland put on a fantastic performance in San Franciso, beating San Francisco on their home turf in the first match! Later the same day losing to Allen Town, the club rallied togeather and went on to win the next three matches over the course of the weekend to bring the shield title to Portland for the first time. The comradery was high and we are already looking forward to next year in Philidalphia.

Portland Defeats Rival Barley House Wolves!
Portland defeated the Barley House Wolves to avenge their early season loss in New Hampshire. The tightly contested game ended with Portland winning 1-9 (12) to 1-5 (8). The Portland squad benefited from high quality performances up and down the field, with players challenging the hard-hitting Wolves at every opportunity. With the win, Portland also earned a berth in the Northeast Jr C Championship Game in Canton, MA on August 28th where they will again face the Barley House Wolves--this time for the trophy. Join us for the Championship match and see hurling and Gaelic football title games at all skill levels.
Pub League: Griffin Club Wins Championship (7/30/11)
The Griffin Club capped their undefeated season by winning the pub league championship on Saturday with a 1-10 (13) to 0-7 (7) win over RiRa. While RiRa put up a solid resistance, they were not able to overcome the defensive play of Joel Wezowicz and Aiden O'Brien. A key for the Griffin Club offensively was Matt Anderson's ability to put points over from mid-field. For RiRa, Damien Bulger led the scoring by putting 6 points over the bar. Congratulations to the Griffin Club on a great win!
Pub League: Griffin Club & RiRa Advance to Final (7/27/11)
The Griffin Club earned a spot in the pub league final with a win over Samuels/ Seacoast. The Griffin Club spread the scoring across many players, with Matt Flaherty and Chris Crowley turning in nice performances offensively. Kevin Collier put up a goal and a point for Samuels/Seacoast.
RiRa defeated Brian Boru with a very strong team effort. Though the game was competitive throughout, the score favored RiRa 6-10 (28) to 1-9 (12). Alan McGrath scored 5 points for RiRa from mid-field, and forwards Damien Bulger, Chris Muncie, and Chris Fleming filled in the rest of the score. Jon Gormley was strong in goal, and the rest of the defense and mid-fielders did well to slow down a potent Boru offense. As always, however, Larry Maher was tough to stop, putting 6 points over the bar.

Pub League: Griffin Club Completes Undefeated Season (7/20/11)
The Griffin Club defeated RiRa to end the regular season without a loss (8-0-1). The Griffin Club scored early and often to win 6-11 (29) to RiRa's 5-4 (19). Matt Anderson led the scoring for the Griffin Club with a goal and six overs. For RiRa, Damien Bulger accounted for most of the scoring. In the early game, Samuel's/Seacoast posted an impressive win by the score of 6-3 (21) to 1-5 (8) over Brian Boru. Samuel's/Seacoast earned a tie for 3rd place in the standings in their inaugeral season. Terence Leahy lead the way in scoring, but received excellent support from his team of mainly 1st year players.
Portland Takes Lead in Northeast Division Jr C Standings
Portland Hurling Club put together an impressive win over Worcester on Saturday, July 9th. Worcester was forced to play the game a man short, and Portland capitalized, holding Worcester scoreless throughout the match. Jake "Cheese" Burns put up a quality performance on the offensive end, scoring a goal and a number of overs. The Gormley brothers, Matt & Jon, both played well on the defensive end. Aiden O'Brien dominated at half-back, delivering many quality passes to the offensive end of the field.

Pub League: A Week of Tightly Contested Games (7/6/11)
The Samuels/Seacoast won their game by forfeit over a Brian Boru squad who were a man short. Brian Boru borrowed a player to play out the game and faced a stiff challenge when the first-year Samuels/Seacoast team scored 4 goals. In the second game, RiRa played the undefeated Griffin Club team to a draw. Aiden O'Brien put 6 over the bar for the Griffin Club. For RiRa, the normally defense-focused Matt Gormley scored a goal and two overs.
Pub League: Brian Boru & RiRa Continue Battle for 2nd (6/29/11)
The Griffin Club defeated the Samuels/Seacoast team and remains undefeated at the top of the pub league standings. Brian Boru defeated RiRa by a single goal 3-2(11) to 2-2(8). With the win, Boru moved themselves back into a tie with RiRa for 2nd place. These teams are certain to continue to battle through the closing weeks of the season.
Pub League: Griffin Club Still Perfect, RiRa in 2nd (6/22/11)
In the early game RiRa gained a win over a short-handed Samuel's/Seacoast team. The second game was a classic, with Griffin Club earning a two-point win by a score of 2-10 to 2-8 over Brian Boru. With the win, the Griffin Club squad remains perfect on the season. RiRa moved into second place, a game ahead of Brian Boru.
Portland Defeats Worcester in NE Series Game
With a win over Worcester Sunday at the Irish Cultural Center in Canton, MA, Portland has moved into a 3-way tie for the lead in the Northeast Jr C division. In a game that went down to the wire, Portland secured a two point win with clutch points from Joel Wezowicz in the closing minutes. The final score was Portland 1-9 (12) to Worcester's
2-4 (10).
Pub League: Brian Boru moves into tie for 2nd Place (6/15/11)
In the early game, the Griffin Club remained perfect on the season, pulling out a close win over RiRa. Later Brian Boru moved into a tie for second in the pub league standings with a win over the Samuels/Seacoast squad.
Pub League: Brian Boru Looks Good in First Win (6/8/11)
Brian Boru notched their 1st win of the season over RiRa Wednesday. The game was close at the half, but Boru pulled away in the second half using a combination of speed and quality passing that earned them a pub league title last year.
In the second game, the Griffin Club extended their perfect streak with a win over the Samuels/Seacoast squad. The Griffin Club spread the scoring across the team with many players scoring multiple points. The Samuels/Seacoast squad put up a good fight in their new yellow and black jerseys:
Pub League: Griffin Club Maintains Perfect Record (6/1/11)
Matt Flaherty tallied 3 goals to lead the Griffin Club to a 6-3(21) to 2-4(10) win over Brian Boru. Joe Flaherty, Mike Delahanty, and Aiden O'Brien also put the ball in the net for the Griffin Club. For Brian Boru, first-year player, Cameron Thompson scored a goal, as did Matt Ryle.
In the second game, RiRa moved into sole possession of second place with a 1-12(15) to 1-2(5) win over Samuel's/Seacoast. Damien Bolger scored a goal and 3 points and Alan McGrath put 6 over the bar. The Samuel's/Seacoast goal came when Sean Diffley swatted a free out of the air into the net.
Pub League: Griffin Club Takes Over 1st Place (5/25/11)
The Griffin Club won their pub league match Wednesday, after RiRa came up a player short of a full squad. The game was played out, and Matt Anderson led the way for the Griffin Club with a goal and 3 points. Three other Griffin Club members put goals in the net, including a 1st year player, Larry Robertson. Chris Muncie led scoring for RiRa with 2 goals and two points.
Samuels/Seacoast notched their first win, as Brian Boru didn't field a full squad. First year players Sean Dolan and John Keimel each put a goal into the net and Terence Leahy added 4 points. Matt Ryle produced 4 goals and an over in front for Boru.
Portland Loses NE Series Opener
Portland lost its season-opener played against the Barley House Wolves in Concord, NH. The Wolves scored 4-9 (21) to Portland's 2-7 (13). Portland had a hard time settling into the match, and was held scoreless in the 1st half. Portland fought back and outscored its opponent in the 2nd half, but it was not enough. Larry Maher helped jump-start the team with a cracker of a goal off of a free. Chuck Schlicher and Damien Bolger were also key players as Portland tried to claw its way back.
This was the 1st of 4 games Portland will play as part of a "championship series" this season. Portland, the Barley House Wolves, and Worcester will each play each other twice and the top two teams will square off for the Northeast Jr C championship in Canton, MA in August.
2011 Pub League is Underway! (5/18/11)
The Portland Hurling Club pub league kicked off Wednesday in the drizzle and fog. The season opener featured the new Samuels/Seacoast team vs. the Griffin Club. Samuels/Seacoast is comprised of mainly new players and was defeated by a Griffin Club squad that has come a long way from the beginning of last year's season, when they were in a similar situation. The Griffin Club earned their victory mainly through goals, with a variety of players putting a total of 10 into the net. Samuels/Seacoast were lead by a goal and 2 points from captain Terence Leahy, and good performances from new players.
The late game was a rematch from last years championship with RiRa taking on Brian Boru. RiRa defeated the defending champions, who were missing key players and playing without subs. For RiRa, Chris Muncie played well up front with 3 goals and an over. Captain Alan McGrath added a goal and 5 points. Damien Bolger put 4 points over the bar. For Boru, Matt Ryle and Jacob "Cheese" Burns put points on the board.
